Senate Seeks Relief For Delta Flood Victims

THE Senate has passed a motion calling on the Executive arm of the Federal
Government to urgently send relief materials to the victims of flood disaster
in Delta Central Senatorial District of Delta State.
Endorsing a motion sponsored by Senator Felix Ibru, who represents the
Senatorial District, the senate took the following resolutions on Thursday:
" That the unprecedented flood disaster in Ughelli North, Ughelli
South, Udu, Sapele, Uvwie, Ororekpe, Ethiope East and Ethiope West Local
Government Area in Delta State be noted.
" That the Federal Government should as a matter of urgency send
relief materials, equipment and reconstruction materials to the victims
of the flood disaster.
" That the Federal Ministry of Environment and other relevant Federal
Government Agencies be directed take urgent action to assist the state
and the Local Governments in preventing a re-occurrence of the tragic
situation.
"That a condolence letter be sent to the Government and people of
the affected Local Government Areas in Senatorial District through the
Government of Delta State."
Explaining the situation to his colleagues, Ibru disclosed that over
5000 houses, shops and farms worth over N800 million had been submerged
due to continuous heavy rainfall in the affected areas.
Over " 70,000 people who were displaced by the flood are now taking
refuge in available school and church premises," he said.
Senator Ibru and some prominent leaders of the areas had toured round
the areas last weekend and called on the Federal Government to quickly
assist the victims.
